Elizabeth and her daughters are released from sanctuary and return to the court where Lizzie reciprocates Richard's feelings for her. Henry effects his rebellion - with Stanley now amongst his supporters - and at the Battle of Bosworth Field kills Richard, releasing his mother from her house arrest. Aware of his antagonists Richard rewards those whom he believes can serve him, including Stanley, the duke of Buckingham and Thomas Brackenbury. Anne visits Brackenbury behind her husband's back, expressing her fear that his throne will not be safe as long as the princes in the tower are alive. Elizabeth, fearing for the boys' safety, accepts an offer of help to rescue them by Margaret, whose son Henry is now betrothed to Elizabeth's daughter Lizzie. However the attempt fails and, learning that the boys are dead, Elizabeth believes that she was double-crossed by Margaret in her ambition to see Henry crowned king. In fact Margaret and her kinsman Buckingham lead a rebellion against Richard but it fails, due to a torrential rain-storm magically evoked by Elizabeth. Buckingham is executed whilst Stanley, who betrayed his wife's part in the revolt, is awarded her lands as she is arrested and exiled. Robert 'Fletch' Fletcher and his wife Caz are trying for a baby though she is irritated by his nights out with the lads. When his mother falls dangerously ill Caz contacts Fletch's long-estranged father Patrick, much to her husband's disapproval. In fact there is no joyful reunion as the meeting reveals the circumstances of Fletch's paternity whilst Patrick, now remarried, has no interest in starting a new relationship with his son. An over-reacting Fletch turns on Caz but is made to see by his workmates that she is the best and only significant thing in his life, leading to reconciliation between the couple. Ragnar, his family and others travel to Uppsala to pay homage to the gods. It's a trip they make every nine years and he invites Athelstan to accompany them. Ragnar is still having difficulty accepting the loss of their baby and Lagertha worries if she will ever bear him another son. The drug, sex and alcohol-fueled festivities are a revelation to Athelstan who learns that there will also be animal and human sacrifice. He renounces his Christian faith but a priest tells him he is to be a sacrificed. He is spared but Ragnar's group must provide a substitute. King Horik welcomes Ragnar who pledges his fealty and his service. In return, he asks Horik to join forces with him so they can send bigger raiding parties to the west. Rollo. it would seem, has ambitions of his own. It's a long cold winter but in June 794, three viking ships make their way to England and travel down the Tyne to attack King Aelle. Earl Haraldson attacks Ragnar's farm intent on teaching him a lesson.They lay waste to much of the area killing all of his livestock and burning his buildings to the ground. A wounded Ragnar surrenders to give his family time to get to their boat. He manages to escape and is taken to Floki who nurses him back to health. Rollo meanwhile tells Haraldson that Ragnar must be dead and Rollo is allowed to stay. Siggy warns him him that her husband will kill him. Rollo should have heeded her warning as he is taken and tortured. When Ragnar hears what has happened he challenges Haraldson to personal combat.
